Recent research shows that California is one of just five states to see a population decline last year, with about 9,465 fewer residents from 2024 to 2025—a small 0.02% dip. While U.S. population growth overall slowed to under 1%, Vermont experienced the largest decline. Here in California, the median age is now 39, with 5.21% of residents under age 5, and 17.5% over 65. As someone who’s helped buyers and sellers navigate the Redlands, Yucaipa, and Inland Empire markets since 2001, I see firsthand how shifting population trends can influence our local communities, housing demand, and opportunities for those considering a move—whether you’re looking to buy, sell, or invest in Southern California real estate.
